Bas-relieft, handmade metal tiles are designs in metal pressed with a 50 ton hydraulic press. These designs were made in copper and brass: thin stainless steel, bronze and aluminum are also options. Many custom tile designs are possible, as well as patinas. Currently, the sizes are limited to 4″ x 4″ and 6″ x 6″. However, custom metal tiles could be made in other sizes, probably up to 12″ x 12″. Conceivably I could obtain a 4-poster hydraulic press with a 48″ x 48″ bed. Then that would be the limiting size. That would be very cool.
These metal art tiles are really fun to make. I use a block of urethane as the under-die. So the stack goes like this, from bottom to top: thick urethane (100 durometer); copper tile (oversize – trim later); design attached to masonite or plexiglas; 1/2″ steel plate; hydraulic press. Sometimes 5 tons of pressure is enough. For the thicker metals, 30 tons might be required.
